Mobile applications
Applications for people working away from a desk.
Mobile work has different demands from office work. A technician may have one hand free, a customer may only use the service occasionally, and a connection may disappear halfway through a task. We design and build mobile applications around those conditions rather than shrinking a desktop interface onto a phone.
Choose the right form of application
We first look at what users need to do and what their devices must support. A mobile website may be enough. An installed application may be more appropriate when the work depends on device features, notifications or a particular offline experience.
The choice between a shared codebase and platform-specific development follows those requirements. We discuss maintenance and distribution as well as the initial build.
Design for interruptions and limited connectivity
Useful mobile flows are short and clear. We consider how people sign in, enter information, attach a photograph and recover from an interrupted task. The interface should show what has been saved and what still needs attention.
If offline work is required, we define which information can stay on the device and how it will be synchronised. Conflicting changes and lost devices need an agreed response, not an assumption that the connection will always work.
Prepare for release and continued maintenance
We test the important flows on the devices and operating systems included in the scope. Distribution may use public stores or an organisation's own device management arrangements, depending on who will use the application.
Release accounts, privacy information, support responsibilities and updates are planned with your team. Publishing is part of the work, while final approval by an application store remains outside a developer's control.
What you receive
- Mobile workflows and tested interface designs
- Application builds for the agreed platforms
- Backend connections and agreed offline behaviour
- Release preparation, documentation and maintenance plan
A good fit when
- Staff need to complete work on site or in the field
- Customers need device features a website cannot adequately provide
- An existing mobile tool makes simple tasks difficult
Common questions
Do we need both an iOS and an Android application?
That depends on your users and how devices are managed. We can support both platforms, but a controlled internal device fleet may have different requirements from a public customer application.
Can the application work offline?
Selected workflows can be designed for offline use. We agree which data and actions must be available without a connection, along with the rules for synchronising later. Some functions will still depend on online services.
Who manages the store accounts?
We agree that before release. For an application owned by your business, distribution accounts should normally be under your organisation's control, with the access needed for development and publishing arranged separately.
